Kamala Harris Becomes First Woman of Color to Be a U.S. Vice Presidential Candidate

Kamala Harris, a senator from California, became the first woman of color to be nominated for the position of Vice President on August 11, 2020, marking a huge moment in the history of the United States’ electoral history.

The 55-year-old Harris became the first Black woman and the first person of Indian descent to appear on a major party ticket, selected by Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden. The two will run against incumbent Donald Trump and the sitting Vice President Mike Pence.

“In this election, we have a chance to change the course of history. We’re all in this fight,” Harris said at the Democratic National Convention as she accepted the nomination.

Harris was born in Oakland, California, and grew up in a single-parent household after her father left the family early in her life. The hard work her mother did to provide for her children left a deep impression on her as she navigated her life.

“She raised us to be proud, strong Black women. And she raised us to know and be proud of our Indian heritage,” Harris said in her speech. “She taught us to put family first — the family you’re born into and the family you choose.”

Harris spent the majority of her career working in law in her home state, achieving high-ranking titles by winning various elections. She achieved a lot in these positions, and earned praise from many other politicians.

She ran for a Senate seat in 2016, and won it easily. For the past four years, Harris has worked in Washington D.C., largely opposed to actions President Trump has introduced during his time in the White House, such as stricter rules and outright bans of immigration into the country.

Harris herself ran for the Democratic candidacy for the presidency in 2019, but dropped out early after her polling ended up being low. Despite some early clashes with Biden during Democratic debates, they were close, and many experts saw her as one of the safest choices Biden could make for his election.

While the position of Vice President is often not a top concern in a presidential election, many are much more concerned about it in 2020. If elected, Biden would become the oldest President in United States history, and many would be worried about him stepping away from the position after his first term or before.

President Trump claims Harris would have been his “first choice” of picks Biden could have made. Shortly after she was selected, Trump began criticizing her, including leaning into racist conspiracy theories claiming that Harris wasn’t actually eligible to run for the Vice Presidency. Law experts quickly said that these claims were completely wrong.
